For a long time, I thought being strong meant pushing through.

If something felt uncomfortable, I told myself to keep going. If something felt heavy, I tried to carry it anyway. If my body felt tense, tired, or unsettled, I usually assumed I just needed to rest, pray, work harder, or get through the next thing on my list.

Like many of us, I had learned how to function under pressure. I knew how to show up, take care of responsibilities, support the people around me, and keep moving even when something inside me felt disconnected.

But during one of the most difficult seasons of my life, I started noticing something I could no longer ignore: my body was responding to things before my mind was ready to name them.

There were certain conversations that would make my stomach tighten immediately. I would feel tension in my shoulders without realizing I had been holding it there. Sometimes my chest would feel heavy, even though I kept telling myself I was fine.

At first, I dismissed it. I told myself I was overthinking. I told myself I was being too sensitive. I told myself I needed to toughen up and keep moving forward.

But the more I paid attention, the more I realized my body was not being dramatic. It was communicating.

That was a powerful shift for me because I had spent so much of my life trying to think my way through everything. I believed that if I could understand the situation logically, explain it clearly, or find the right solution, I could move through it.

And yes, the mind matters. Our thoughts matter. Our perspective matters.

But healing is not only mental.

Sometimes the body knows the truth before the mind is ready to accept it.

Stress, discomfort, grief, overwhelm, resentment, fear, and emotional exhaustion do not only live in our thoughts. They can show up in the body as tightness, fatigue, headaches, shallow breathing, stomach discomfort, jaw tension, or that subtle feeling that something is not right.

The problem is that many of us were never taught how to listen to those signals. We were taught to push through them. We were taught to be responsible, dependable, and strong. We were taught to keep going because life keeps going.

But what happens when the body has been trying to get our attention for a long time?

For me, mindfulness became a way to stop dismissing what my body was telling me. It helped me pause long enough to ask a different question.

Instead of asking, “How do I get through this?” I started asking, “What is my body telling me right now?”

That question changed things.

It helped me notice when I was holding tension. It helped me recognize when a conversation, environment, or relationship was affecting me more deeply than I wanted to admit. It helped me understand that my reactions were not random. They were connected to what I had been carrying.

This is part of what I mean when I talk about Medicine of the Moment.

It is not about being perfectly calm. It is not about having a flawless meditation practice or removing all stress from your life. It is about learning how to notice what is happening inside of you in real time.

Sometimes the medicine is a breath before you respond.

Sometimes it is realizing your shoulders have been tense all day.

Sometimes it is noticing that your body feels heavy after a certain conversation.

Sometimes it is giving yourself permission to pause before you automatically say yes, push through, or pretend something does not affect you.

These moments may seem small, but they matter because awareness gives us a choice. When we become aware of what our body is communicating, we can begin to respond with more care, clarity, and intention.

So today, I want to invite you to check in with yourself.

Where does stress usually show up in your body?

Do you tend to ignore it, explain it away, or push through it?

What might your body be trying to tell you right now?

You do not have to have the answer immediately. Just begin by noticing.

That one moment of awareness may be the medicine your body has been asking for.
